California is home to over 45,000 children in foster care, with 230,000 children having lost a parent.
Los Angeles County has 25,000 foster youth, many of whom have faced abuse, neglect, or abandonment. Infants are particularly vulnerable, entering the system at higher rates and often experiencing prolonged stays. These children need stable homes, education, and care to thrive.
The Bay Area’s foster youth face immense challenges, with many aging out of the system into homelessness. In Alameda County, 18% of unhoused young adults are former foster youth, while in San Francisco, 28% of homeless individuals under 25 have been in foster care. Foster placements have declined, leaving children with fewer options for stable homes. These youth need housing, education, and community support to break the cycle of hardship.
